Sounds From The Other City festival (SFTOC) is a celebration of new music and performance, uniting the cream of the national and international scene with some of the city’s finest independent promoters, collectives and club nights. Happening regularly on the May Day Bank Holiday each year along the Chapel St corridor of the historic city of Salford, 2017 will be the festival’s 13th installment - and the first time since 2006 it has been held in April. With the past 4 editions sold out well in advance of the big day, it is highly recommended that you get your tickets booked early.

“Using lots of little quirky of the beaten track venues, Sounds from the Other City is one of the most exciting events in the region” Clash Magazine
“This annual event is important for local bands, as well as drawing attention to the rejuvenation of an area that is riddled with urban decay. Long may it continue.” Silent Radio
“A pinball machine of opportunity with each crevice presenting a myriad of experiences waiting to swallow you up whole” Skiddle
“A festival like no other” Too Many Blogs
“It’s the spirit of this festival that keeps us all coming back, the sense of celebration that in no way feels forced or phony, the prospect that you might bump into someone you know at any time, swapping stories and making plans to meet that may or may not come off. In so many ways, who you watch is beside the point.” Chimp Magazine

Originally shot in 25 countries on six continents, Baraka brings together a series of stunningly photographed scenes to capture what director Ron Fricke calls 'a guided meditation on humanity.'
A new, two day micro-Festival celebrating grassroots live music, creative collaboration, community networking and multimedia art/film and performance.
A joint venture between Manchester record labels AnalogueTrash and Valentine Records, and featuring an eclectic line up of label artists and friends, FOUNDATIONS is about art, space and community – and how we can reimagine a conventional music festival as a more collaborative and immersive experience.
Manchester duo OLA will be performing their live soundtrack to accompany a screening of Ron Fricke's 1982 documentary film Koyaanisqatsi. OLA’s score crosses electronic, ambient, classical and pop into a cinematic soundtrack tied perfectly to the film’s themes and visuals.
Drawing its title from the Hopi word meaning "life out of balance," this renowned documentary reveals how humanity has grown apart from nature. Featuring extensive footage of natural landscapes and elemental forces, the film gives way to many scenes of modern civilization and technology. Given its lack of narration and dialogue, the production makes its points solely through imagery and music, with many scenes either slowed down or sped up for dramatic effect.
The screening will also open with a short film by film-maker Paul Daly called I’Dismantle with a soundtrack by OLA.

On the night before Halloween on the 30th of October, the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum will be hosting a ticketed event called Perfect? to showcase the newly commissioned artwork STARKERS from internationally renowned multi-media artists, Davy and Kristin McGuire. In an alternative evening with music from Manchester based O>L>A with their dreampop, ambient sound and DJ Riv who recently headlined Manchester Pride; creative food from Supper Club @the Nook, and a bar selling craft beers from Brimstage Brewery, bottled lager, wines and spirits, and the evening sounds Perfect?
In May, it was announced that the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum had won the public vote to host an internationally renowned artist commission in October. This is part of the new Museums at Night nationwide events similar to Light Night. In the site specific piece STARKERS, Davy and Kristin McGuire explore the idea of perfection and the female form. Using projection, voice and music, the artists animate a gallery space; creating an inimitable experience that challenges the traditional preconceptions of the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum and its collections.
The McGuires head an award winning creative studio that design unique visual experiences through art installations and theatrical projects. As well as creating bespoke projects for cultural institutions and brands, they produce and sell their own works through international galleries.
Davy and Kristin‘s hybrid art works are delicate, filigree fantasies built with fragile materials that are momentarily brought to life through digital projections and silent storytelling.
Visitors will be free to roam through the galleries at night, giving them an alternative experience of the spaces and the exhibitions. After passing through a dynamic exhibition, commissioned for one night only, and the night-time voyeurs finally arrive at STARKERS.
The night will include private views for two new exhibitions drawn from the collections that are inspired by the work of Davy and Kristin. The first thought-provoking exhibition will explore the female nude as a cultural reference point through time. The second will explore themes and ideas developed in the McGuire’s installation. Both exhibitions will draw items from the Williamson’s collections giving an opportunity to see works not often on show.
